Since 2007, pastry chef Eugenia Theodosopoulos has operated the chic and always-packed Essence Bakery Cafe on University Drive in Tempe. Her macaroons have become legendary, her desserts a wonder. Now, for those in the Phoenix-Arcadia area long drooling and pouting for a location of their own, the wait is over. Essence Bakery opened in October at Indian School Road and 38th Street, larger than the Tempe store and already delighting legions of fans.
Scene: Designed with an interior of wood and steel and a concrete floor, Phoenix’s Essence Bakery is surprisingly cozy. Even with all those hard surfaces, which can lend harshness and a deafening sound experience, the noise level is nothing like a din. In fact, there’s a warmth here that doesn’t only come from the menu but also from the gracious service.
